Riikka Palonen

Riikka is a well known and multitalented artist. Beyond her visual art, she carries a natural flair for performance, and her voice as a writer is clear and undeniable.

In 1992, Riikka graduated with a Master of Arts from the University of Industrial Arts in Helsinki, from the department of photographic art. Even as a student, she stood apart, bold and unafraid to give form to her own pain and emotion, transforming inner landscapes into arresting visual expression.

She worked for a time as a freelance photographer, focusing mainly on theatre. Yet she was never content merely to document a production; through her lens, she sought to hold the pulse of the performance itself, its breath, its tension, its fleeting truth.

After profound changes in her life, Riikka bid farewell to the city and returned to her rural roots. With that return came a quiet shift in focus. Drawing from personal experience and from the deep well of folk history, its art and craft traditions, she turned increasingly toward painting, drawing, and textile based work. Here, close to the land, her practice deepened into something more elemental, rooted in memory, soil, story, and silence.

At the heart of Riikka’s multifaceted expression lies a deeply personal vision, a precise and tender observation of the world around her, and a style that honours tradition while remaining unmistakably her own.

Her works are at once sensitive and powerful, a balance that mirrors the artist herself. In this way, her practice resonates deeply with the Wildwood theme, where the forest is not merely a landscape but a living presence, a keeper of ancestral knowledge and quiet transformation. Riikka’s art feels as though it emerges from that very woodland edge, where human experience and the natural world meet, and where stories, like roots, run deep beneath the surface.
